WE TURN DATA INTO META-KNOWLEDGE ABOUT SCIENCE

Bibliometric metadata on scientific publications provide unique, large-scale insights into the science and innovation system. Bibliometrics develops specific methods and indicators for analyzing this system and is supported in Germany by the Kompetenznetzwerk Bibliometrie (KB). The KB collaboratively develops and operates a data infrastructure within and for the network, supports its use for research and reporting through capacity building, and fosters knowledge exchange among users. The open network brings together more than 25 institutions from various fields – including information science, sociology, economics, and computer science. In addition to supporting and enriching bibliometric research, the KB also aims to promote knowledge transfer through bibliometric reports and monitoring activities for stakeholders in the science system. BIBLIOMETRIC DATA AND ANALYSIS

Bibliometric data is often used in an evaluative context to analyse and compare the impact of, for example, organisations or research groups, countries or other entities on the basis of publication and citation data. However, the size and quality of bibliometric databases also enable a wide range of other analyses of the characteristics and dynamics of the scientific system. One example of a monitoring tool based on the infrastructure of the competence network is the OA Monitor, which supports analyses of the transformation of the German publication system towards open access and thus provides evidence for control and governance processes.

Save the date: european summer school for scientometrics 2026
This year’s esss will take place in Leuven/Belgium from August 31st to September 4th 2026!

The European Summer School for Scientometrics (esss) offers advanced training in scientometrics, covering key methods, indicators, and major databases. The program combines solid theoretical foundations with hands-on applications in contexts ranging from academic research to science policy and evaluation.
It is aimed at researchers—especially PhD candidates and early-career scholars—as well as research managers, librarians, and information professionals interested in science and technology indicators.
A hallmark of the esss are its outstanding social events (look here), which not only foster genuine community and lasting connections but also provide the unique chance to meet and engage with the leading experts of the field on a personal level.

WE WOULD LIKE TO GET INTO DIALOGUE WITH YOU

One of the KB’s objectives is to organise and support knowledge transfer and exchange within and outside the network. We offer various formats for this purpose:

RESEARCH SERVICES

Do you have questions about bibliometric research or related topics, or just want to learn more? Maybe you are looking for particular expertise on bibliometrics or related topics? In our network you will find partners with the expertise to answers your questions. Our offers include the comprehensive analysis of the performance of scientific institutions or sub-areas, the provision of key figures and performance indicators for evaluation processes, collaboration and network analyses, and advice on the interpretation, use and further development of indicator-based evaluation systems.
