inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary research and appli\u00adca\u00adtion field concerned with the measur\u00ada\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty and quanti\u00adta\u00adtive analy\u00adsis of scien\u00adtif\u00adic publi\u00adca\u00adtion and citation data. How does it work? It is based on data that describes scien\u00adtif\u00adic articles, such as authors\u2019 names, article title, source title, publi\u00adca\u00adtion year, and authors\u2019 affil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtions (= organi\u00adza\u00adtion\u00adal address\u00ades). This data is gener\u00adat\u00aded as metada\u00adta in the publi\u00adca\u00adtion system and is primar\u00adi\u00adly processed for infor\u00adma\u00adtion retrieval purpos\u00ades in databas\u00ades such as Web of Science, Scopus, and, more recent\u00adly, OpenAlex. Addition\u00adal\u00adly, affil\u00adi\u00ada\u00adtion data allows us to deter\u00admine authors\u2019 assign\u00adments to their institutions\u2014such as universities\u2014and, through them, with countries, enabling publi\u00adca\u00adtions to be aggre\u00adgat\u00aded at these levels. The second, inter\u00adac\u00adtive map above provides an overview of the 200 most produc\u00adtive insti\u00adtu\u00adtions in Germany. Each circle repre\u00adsents the number of publi\u00adca\u00adtions in 2026; circles with a light border denote a single insti\u00adtu\u00adtion, while circles without a light border are further subdi\u00advid\u00aded with a click of the mouse. One of the histor\u00adi\u00adcal roots of biblio\u00admet\u00adrics lies in the search for empir\u00adi\u00adcal laws, such as Bradford\u2019s Law, origi\u00adnal\u00adly devel\u00adoped in a library science context. In a relat\u00aded field, patents are often used to analyze knowl\u00adedge trans\u00adfer process\u00ades towards commer\u00adcial application.<\/p>\n<p>A core area of classi\u00adcal, evalu\u00ada\u00adtive biblio\u00admet\u00adrics is the devel\u00adop\u00adment, assess\u00adment, and use of indica\u00adtors to measure charac\u00adter\u00adis\u00adtics of publi\u00adca\u00adtion corpo\u00adra. These indica\u00adtors are used for the evalu\u00ada\u00adtion of insti\u00adtu\u00adtions, sectors, countries, or individ\u00adual researchers and research groups. Due to differ\u00adences in disci\u00adpli\u00adnary cultures, indica\u00adtors should be field-normalised or other\u00adwise not used for inter\u00addis\u00adci\u00adpli\u00adnary compar\u00adisons. Field-normalised citation rates (FNCR), the field-normalised propor\u00adtion of highly cited publi\u00adca\u00adtions or collab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion indica\u00adtors are used, for example. In contrast, the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) or the H\u2011index are often criti\u00adcal\u00adly discussed in the&nbsp;field.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the specif\u00adic nature of the data, which, as explained above, was not primar\u00adi\u00adly creat\u00aded for this purpose, techniques for data cleans\u00ading, disam\u00adbigua\u00adtion of entities (especial\u00adly authors, organ\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtions and research funders) and match\u00ading differ\u00adent data sources, as well as methods such as cluster\u00ading based on co-citations or bibli\u00ado\u00adgraph\u00adic coupling for science mapping, for example.<\/p>\n<p>These techniques, methods, and indica\u00adtors are also applied in explorato\u00adry research settings and contribute to quanti\u00adta\u00adtive science and innova\u00adtion studies\u2014for example, in analyz\u00ading the impact of funding programs, gender dispar\u00adi\u00adties, the identi\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adtion of innova\u00adtions and emerg\u00ading research fields, or studies on scien\u00adtif\u00adic misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>While such questions are typical\u00adly addressed using statis\u00adti\u00adcal analy\u00adsis, biblio\u00admet\u00adrics has increas\u00ading\u00adly devel\u00adoped method\u00adolog\u00adi\u00adcal inter\u00adfaces with other fields, such as network analy\u00adsis and infor\u00adma\u00adtion retrieval. It can also be combined with quali\u00adta\u00adtive approach\u00ades.
