European Summer School for Scientometrics (esss)

Bibliometric methods are increasingly being used to analyse developments and trends in science and technology. Decisions in science policy and management often entail far reaching consequences. The work with bibliometric data and the construction and interpretation of indicators requires expert knowledge that is available only to a small number of stakeholders in central Europe, not the least due to missing training opportunities.

As a reaction to this lack of training courses in bibliometrics and the growing demand Vienna University, Humboldt University Berlin, Deutsches Zentrum für Hochschul- und Wissenschaftsforschung (DZHW) and Catholic University Leuven (KU Leuven) agreed to jointly found the European Summer School for Scientometrics (esss). The summer school takes place in Berlin, Vienna or Leuven, changing every year. Scholars of the Competence Centre routinely give talks and instruction sessions at esss.

esss offers education and training for important aspects of quantitative science and technology studies. While bibliometrics is the focus, relevant parts of patent analysis will be covered as well. The theoretical education is complimented with practical exercises.

The program is geared towards the needs of decision makers in science policy and management, scientists and librarians. esss is open to interested persons from Europe and beyond.

The esss is headed by a steering committee:

  • Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Glänzel, KU Leuven
  • Prof. Dr. Koenraad Debackere, KU Leuven
  • Prof. Dr. Stefan Hornbostel, HU Berlin, DZHW
  • Dr. Sybille Hinze, Berlin University Alliance
  • Dr. Juan Gorraiz, Vienna University
  • Dr. Christian Gumpenberger, Vienna University

Its administrative offices are located at Vienna University:
